Born on 23rd June 1904 [Newmarket 3b:490], (as Charles William GREEN), eldest son of Robert and Alice GREEN (née HYNER).

1911 census...Aged 6, William was at 14 Gwynne Terrace, Exning Road, Newmarket with his father Robert [34] labourer, born Hessett, Suffolk; his mother Alice [31] born Newmarket and brother Robert [4] born Newmarket.

He had a younger brother Frederick G [1912 -Newmarket].

He married Emily Edith JOHNSON (11-6-1903] (of Liverpool) in 1928, they had a daughter, Sylvia Judith born in Newmarket in 1935. There were other children Cyril C [1929] and John R [1932]

In the 1939 register his family were at Stanley House Cottage, Bury Road, Newmarket, wife Eileen, sons Cyril and John. There are3 closed records, one presumably Sylvia.
His parents Robert [[13-2-1874] a builder's labourer ad mother Alice [16-1-1880] were at 1 Heath Terrace, Cheveley Road, Newmarket.



William was captured at the surrender of Singapore to the Japanese on 15th February 1942. His PoW card gives his place of birth as Church Lane, Newmarket, his own family address as Stanley House Cottages, Bury Road, Newmarket. Not all the details are in English

He died of mal-nutrition in Kranji and was moved from the temporary Kranji Cemetery to his present resting place at Kranji War Cemetery on 30th April 1946

and commemorated on his widow's grave in Newmarket.
